Discover Yankeetown, Florida: A Hidden Gem on the Nature Coast
Nestled where the Withlacoochee River meets the Gulf of Mexico, Yankeetown is one of Florida’s last true "Old Florida" towns. With its moss-draped oaks, peaceful waters, and access to the Withlacoochee Gulf Preserve, it’s a quiet paradise for boaters, kayakers, and nature lovers.
Founded in the 1920s by wealthy Northerners escaping cold winters, Yankeetown has kept its laid-back charm. One of its most famous visitors? Elvis Presley, who filmed parts of Follow That Dream here in 1961, brought a touch of Hollywood to this tranquil town.
Whether you're fishing the Gulf, exploring winding coastal trails, or just looking to unplug, Yankeetown is a perfect Nature Coast escape with a story to tell. On a personal note, I visited Yankeetown in the late 80s when I fell in love with the west coast of Florida. More specifically, the Nature Coast. Raised on the east coast of Florida, but eventually moved to the Tampa Bay area.
One of the unique things about the town when I was introduced was Walton's Lodge. (no longer there) The structure is there after a fire and a remodel (see photo below). It's a very small place but has a lot of history.
